Can you give me a 1 minute « Who am I ? » ?
Hello, I’m called Cédric Giscos,  I’m 25 years old and I live in Angresse, south west France. I’m currently training for a BE (Sports Education qualification) in surf. I also work as a swimming coach during the summer season.

Where and when did you first start surfing ?
I started surfing when I was 7 years old. Actually I was spoiled rotten at that time, because my family was living just behing the dunes at the top surf spot at Seignosse-les-Bourdanes.

Do you do any other sports ?

Apart from surfing I like under water harpooning, a bit of fishing, mountain biking and snowboarding.

What was it that attracted you to surfing ?
What I really love about short board surfing is that when you get into a good tube, you don’t think about anything else, you’re totally into the moment ! And what I also really like is tandem riding, there’s such a good feeling of working as a team, sharing amazing experiences, helping each other max out every situation.

Where do you usually go surfing these days ?

My « home » spot is still La Graviere, where you get some amazingly  powerful tubes. For tandem riding it would be Seignosse, where the waves are much longer.

Surfing is enjoying a boom time at the moment, is that a good thing for the sport ? Are you worried about spots becoming too crowded ?
I think surfing is coming to a kind of climax moment. Where I go surfing the spots are already saturated with riders. It’s really not easy just now, and it’s not a situation that is likely to sort itself out on its own. I think we’re all going to have to work together to try and make sure that we can all carry on surfing together harmoniously.

As for the lone surfer who wants to be alone on the water, that’s still possible, there are plenty of deserted spots you can ride, it’s just a question of making the effort. Where there’s a will, there’s a way !

How do you view the development and impact of new sports such as SUP on the surf spots ?

SUP is a great invention when people understand what they’re doing with it. SUP adds a new dimension to surfing, a different kind of approach to the wave.

What do you think of the protectionism/localism that’s happening increasingly at various spots these days ?

In many ways you can understand it. When you see van loads of people arriving from here, there and everywhere, people who don’t understand the water etiquette to be respected, people who don’t even say « hello », then you can understand local resentment. Then again, people shouldn’t get too protective for no real reason. Everyone’s got the right to surf, no matter where they’re from. The general idea though is to respect the local riders who are already on the water.

Have you had the opportunity to surf outside France ?
Actually, I’ve been and surfed on lots of the Canary Islands, and even in Tahiti. In Tahiti there’s a great deal of respect and etiquette regarding the local riders, otherwise you won’t get on a single wave. And they’re quite within their rights. It’s the most beautiful place and needs to be respected and looked after.

How would you convince a friend to start surfing or SUP riding ?

Both Surf and SUP are brilliant for getting yourself in shape.  SUP can be great for getting onto waves you can’t so easily when you’ve only got your hands to paddle for take-off. And you can take your mum for a ride on Sundays if you like :-)

Do you do competition surfing ?
I don’t do any solo shortboard competitions. But in tandem riding, with my partner Lucie Tastayre, we managed 4th place in the French Championships in 2012. We’re planning to do as many tandem competitions as possible in 2013.

What’s in your quiver ? And which is your favourite board ?
At the moment I’m only using two boards. For tubes and other freestyle figures it’s my 6’2 SuperFrog Egg, and for tandem we ride an 11’6 Ace-Tec.
