Bic Surf and sustainable development

Throughout its history, the BIC Group has constantly been committed to responsible business practices. Today, with 15 years' experience producing surfboards, we see the rising importance of sustainable development as an extraordinary opportunity to reaffirm that commitment and the values that are the foundation of our identity. As well as being in step with our times, sustainable development for BIC means an attitude and the will to do the right thing.

The BIC SURF Sustainable Development program favours the principle of continuous improvement and consists of the following priorities:

  • Design products that have minimal impact on the environment.
  • Maintain safe and clean factories.
  • Re-use and recycle unused plastics.
  • Respect the International Labour Organization (ILO) standards and support our partner subcontractors in this process.
  • Establish relationships with our customers and distributors on sustainable development initiatives.

In this respect, we have joined this year the Surfrider Foundation Europe Association. The main principle is straightforward: For every BIC surfboard purchased in 2008, the customer can acquire a full year membership to Surfrider Foundation Europe. This means that each BIC surfboard sold is a step forward in promoting environmental conservation.

Surfrider Foundation Europe presentation

WHO ARE WE?

Surfrider Foundation Europe is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the protection of the ocean, waves and coastlines. It brings together 15 000 members and supporters from all horizons, all with one thing in common: their passion for the ocean and the need to protect it. Surfrider is a nationally recognised association dealing with environmental education and protection.

MAIN AIMS

> To preserve the environment, leisure activities and health

  • Improve the quality of the water
  • Preserve our coastal heritage

> To improve people's behaviour
  • Increase eco-friendly lifestyles
  • Promote sustainable development

> To provide the means to alert and act at a local level
  • Organise and support a network of volunteers to cover the territory
  • Enable everyone to do their share in protecting their coastline

ACTION PROGRAMS
> Water quality monitoring and surveillance of beaches:
  • "Keepers of the coast": Our network of volunteers carries out "active surveillance" of the beaches and informs us of any problems related to pollution or closing of beaches.
  • Surfrider Laboratories: To carry out water quality tests: "increasing awareness of water pollution for better water protection".

> Awareness through education:
  • "Waves and coastlines": Our 220m2 itinerant exhibition receives tens of thousands of school kids each year.
  • Teaching kits: Our multimedia tools are used by teachers and volunteers from our local chapters.
  • Educational films: "From the mountains to Ocean waves: the journey of a drop of water".

> Awareness in the field:
  • Ocean initiatives: Each year Surfrider unites thousands of people during the first weekend of Spring to take part in a huge beach cleaning operation across Europe.
  • Wave tour: Every year, Surfrider is present on the beaches during the whole summer to give eco-advice to holiday makers.
